September 23, 2008  7:30PM - 9:00PM

Attendees:  Michael Di Silvio, Ken Nersesian, Angela Egan, Christine Kern, Peter Ruffner, Warren Vanderwater,
Dan Smith, Carisa Burzynski, Barbara Richko, Steve Camlet, Coleen Graziose

Michael Di Silvio opened the meeting by greeting all those present.

Michael Di Silvio introduced Steve Camlet, a registered dietician and a director of food services with Aramark.  
Mr. Camlet told the group about his background and stated that he was present at this meeting to discuss
rumors regarding the types of food to be served in the students’ cafeterias.  Michael Di Silvio relayed to Mr.
Camlet that a discussion was held with Mr. Markel and the school board members before the last school board
meeting regarding certain state regulations that must be adhered to.  These regulations from the state decree
that certain high fat and high sugar foods cannot be sold and served to the students. Mr. Camlet hopes to
implement new policies and procedures for healthier food service in the near future.  Michael Di Silvio and Dan
Smith suggested that Mr. Camlet get in touch with school board members regarding changes to the schools’
menus.

Dan Smith had several topics he wished to bring to the Wellness Council’s attention.  
-He thanked the group for its donation to the electronic board in front of the high school.  He informed the group
that Jostens had shown specs to Mr. Ragon for a plaque to be put on the board that would list the various
donors to the signboard.  
-The peer leaders at the high school will be presenting at BEATS (Bringing Education About AIDS to Students).  
The district would also like to bring about 20 seventh graders to the conference.  Dan Smith asked for a
donation to help cover the cost of a bus for the students.  
-There was a discussion regarding gateway drugs and the use of heroin, particularly on the South Shore.  Dan
Smith indicated a speaker will make a presentation to the high school students in the near future on this topic.  
Peter Ruffner suggested that perhaps this program could also be made available to parents, as well.
-Dan Smith informed the group that all district employees now have identification cards, and the students will
have them soon.
-Finally, the recycling program in the high school and the middle school is running well.

Barbara Richko gave an update regarding the next Friday Night Live.  The next FNL will be on October 17.  
Angela Egan will get the prizes.  There is help lined up for the night.  Michael Di Silvio will get flyers ready.
Ken Nersesian spoke about the gazebo.  It is all fixed at this time.  He indicated that there was graffiti on it.  
There was a discussion with Dan Smith regarding the graffiti.
The Boy Scouts have been weeding the World War II Memorial periodically.  There was a discussion regarding
refurbishing the plaque on the memorial.

Peter Ruffner informed the group that a meeting with various agencies was held over the summer to discuss
Washington Avenue Park.  Plans will be available on October 22.  The job should be started late summer 2009
and finished about December 2010.  Seaford Little League wants to use the fields again and there will be
discussions regarding fees, etc.
Angela Egan gave the treasurer’s report.  There is a starting balance of $13,173.37.  There are grants pending.

There was a discussion regarding the Hot Chocolate Run.  Christine Kern indicated she would send out flyers,
and order various needed items.  There was a discussion about organizing the group in order to obtain raffles
from local businesses.  There was a decision to schedule a meeting in the next few weeks to further discuss the
Hot Chocolate Run.  

Michael Di Silvio indicated that there is a local Girl Scout troop in need of a small donation in an amount to be
determined.

Michael Di Silvio opened the meeting by greeting all those present.
Angela Egan gave the Treasurer’s Report.  The current balance is $8,114.26.  This does not include money that
must be paid out for Friday Night Live.  Michael Di Silvio indicated that the Wellness Council is in a new grant
period.  A Nassau County grant is forthcoming.

Ken Nersesian told the group that the October Friday Night Live was widely attended.  The various activities
including Guitar Hero, basketball, and pumpkin painting were popular.  Bert Cerasi and Cara Cacioli, the middle
school physical education teachers, approached Ken Nersesian about purchasing ten Playstation systems to
facilitate playing Dance, Dance Revolution at future FNL evenings.  The teachers indicated they would be
responsible for setting up the units, supervising their use, and storing them at the end of the evening.  A motion
was made, seconded, and unanimously approved to fund the purchase of the systems.  An agreement will be
written stating the terms of the purchase and usage of the systems.

Sharon Jonas informed the group that there is a problem maintaining the plants around the World War I
memorial due to a lack of water and the fact that there is no water source nearby.   It was decided that the group
would set up an information table at the upcoming open houses for the middle school and high school.  A
tentative schedule has been set up.

Ken Nersesian indicated that there has been no damage to the gazebo lately.
Michael Di Silvio thanks Angela Egan and the Seaford Historical Society for their hard work on the Harvest Fair
and the donation of cornstalks to the gazebo.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of the Hot Chocolate Run.  Wayne Edwards, from Senator Fuschillo’s
office, asked whether Senator Fuschillo could help out.  Mike Di Silvio requested that Senator Fuschillo attend
the race, if possible.  Mr. Edwards also said he would find out how to go about hanging a banner from the train
station.  Michael Di Silvio informed the group that he would increase the t-shirt order by about 30%.  There was
a further discussion about the design of the t-shirt.  The members of the Wellness Council will solicit local
businesses for raffle prizes.  Each member will contribute a basket to be raffled off. The high school will be
contacted to request that information about the race be posted on the signboard.  The high school and middle
schools will be contacted about mailing applications home with report cards.  Another meeting about the Hot
Chocolate Run will take place in the near future.

Michael Di Silvio opened the meeting by greeting all those present.

Michael Di Silvio and Ken Nersesian discussed the gazebo.  There was a bid out for enhanced surveillance in
the area.  The problem there is little access to electricity.  There was further discussion regarding other types of
surveillance.

The group discussed the Hot Chocolate Run that took place on December 5.  Ken Nersesian suggested
videotaping the race in 2009 and showing it immediately after the race.  A suggestion was given to rearrange the
refreshment area so the hallway is less crowded.  There will be new fees in 2009.  Pre-registration will be $20.00
and day of registration will be $25.00.  Changes will be made as to the sizes of the shirts ordered for next year’s
race.  All in all, the race was deemed a success due to the hard work of the Wellness Council and the many
volunteers who helped out.

A discussion took place regarding Friday Night Live. The November Friday Night Live was a big success.  All of
the activities were well attended and the children are looking forward to the next one on March 13.  Ms. Cacioli
indicated she would organize the next evening differently with sign-up sheets for tournaments and games. Ms.
Cacioli will look to add more activities in the future.

A discussion was had with Ms. Cacioli regarding future fund raisers.
