Car Wash Kills/Injures Hundreds of Victims
It’s a nice summer’s day so you write ‘wash car in driveway’ on your to-do list. Below that you could also write:
suffocate fish in local waterways, corrupt aquatic plant life, and dump toxic brew on turtles, clams, whales and crabs.
Sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what happens when we practice this simple, unassuming household chore.
When we hand wash our own car, harsh detergents, engine oil, gasoline
and exhaust fume residue rinse into the street. Rain eventually washes all
of these contaminants into the nearest storm drain and directly into our local
waterways. This untreated mixture flows into our canals, streams and bays
damaging the whole eco-system. Some of our most basic household
routines – washing our car, spreading fertilizer, using pesticides – have
serious consequences on the same waters we use for swimming, fishing,
clamming and boating.
According to Rob Weltner, President of the local environmental group SPLASH (Stop Polluting/Littering And Save
our Harbors), the first ½ inch of rain is called the ‘first flush’ since it washes all contaminants out of the sky. Soot and
pollution from the air combines with the toxins we use
around our house then runs unrestricted into our
surrounding waterways. “Over the years, I’ve witnessed
first-hand a continual degrading quality of our waters with
the damage building from the bottom up. People need to
know that storm drains dump directly into our waterways
and then rethink common practices. They need to realize
that if our waters are sick, we will be too.”
The following tips can help lessen your impact on our environment:
• Take your car to the car wash – much less water is used and what is used flows to water treatment centers.
• Try a waterless, environmentally-friendly product for cleaning your car such as Freedom Waterless Car Wash.
• Use plain kitty litter to absorb driveway oil spills/spots - sweep debris into a trash can.
• If you must wash your own car, use a product like Simple Green Car Wash which is biodegradable and formulated
for car parts.
• Dump dirty bucket water down house drains/ toilets and not into the street.
• Don’t litter - cigarette butts are loaded with toxic chemicals which sicken marine life, plastic bags choke turtles and
whales as they mistakenly eat them.
• Check air pressure each time you have your car washed as under-inflated tires will cause you to use more gas.
• Wash your car on grass or lawn to allow the ground work as a natural filter.
• Assist the Seaford Wellness Council or SPLASH in their efforts to protect our local environment!
