BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag
The use of plastic bags endangers fish and wildlife and is completely unnecessary. A 2005 study found
that almost 200 species of marine life are adversely affected by plastic bag pollution. Tens of thousands
of whales, birds, seals and turtles are killed annually from plastic bags. Fish and wildlife mortalities are
caused by:
• Strangulation
• Restriction of mobility
• Disruption of the digestive system
Plastic disposable bags too often become unsightly litter that clings to trees, harms wildlife and aquatic
species, clogs storm drains, and ends up as debris in our local bays, estuaries and oceans. Plastics do
not bio-degrade, but rather photo-degrade with exposure to the sun’s UV light into smaller and smaller
pieces. It is estimated that plastic bags take 1,000 years to break down, if at all.
National and local legislation is changing to address this issue and has been known to reduce
litter and bag consumption up to 90% in some regions. In Long Island the Village of Southampton
recently banned the use of disposable bags. A number of stores offer deductions for bringing your own
bag including Stop n Shop (5 cents) and Pathmark and Waldbaums (2 cents.)
Take action!
• Prepare reusable bags for shopping trips and keep them handy in your car so you don’t forget to
actually take them into the store with you!
• Email, write or phone your local, state, and federal leaders. Tell them that eliminating bags saves money
and the environment and that you support BYOB policies.
• Encourage family members and friends to BYOB.
